Summary

The gold standard anthology for anyone who wants to understand the development and current state of literary theory。 Offering 191 pieces by 157 authors, The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, Third Edition, is more comprehensive and more varied in its selection than any other anthology。 Forty-eight NEW selections--concentrated mostly on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries--make the book not only the best overview of the history of theory, but also a remarkably up-to-date portrait of the state of theory today。

FUCK THIS BOOK

This book has a done a lot to shape the way I think and the way I read。 Many of the philosophers/thinkers/writers I have questions about or those whose work influenced the world, are in this book。 From classic to modern philosophy, from queer theory to sexuality treatises, this book has something to teach everyone who is entering the world of academia。

Obviously I didn’t read the whole thing; just a sampling for my history of literary criticism class。 It’s a great resource。 Other than that I’m not sure what to say。 Don’t have a rating for it because this is a bit too scholarly to rate in my opinion。

Obviously, I didn't read them all。 However, this book is really handy as a literature student。 It's like a bible for literature majors。 Since the pandemic, my literary theory classes got cut short and thanks to this book, somehow my knowledge with theories deepened。 The selection is also great。 I've been citing this book as my source from my past papers lately。 Obviously, I didn't read them all。 However, this book is really handy as a literature student。 It's like a bible for literature majors。 Since the pandemic, my literary theory classes got cut short and thanks to this book, somehow my knowledge with theories deepened。 The selection is also great。 I've been citing this book as my source from my past papers lately。 。。。more

I disagree with the inclusion of many, yet it’s large enough and reasonably thorough to still be a solid resource。 Recommended。

No, I have not read every page of this book (lol)! But I am tired of seeing it on my "currently reading" shelf。 No, I have not read every page of this book (lol)! But I am tired of seeing it on my "currently reading" shelf。 。。。more

Super interesting, super helpful。 A great look at theory over time - but there was a lot more politics (mostly Marxism) and theology than I was expecting。

Collection of works by various authors with analysis, critiques, and theories around each piece or chapter's meaning。 Would best be suited for those within literature, writing, or philosophical courses。 Collection of works by various authors with analysis, critiques, and theories around each piece or chapter's meaning。 Would best be suited for those within literature, writing, or philosophical courses。 。。。more

Typical English anthology。 Interesting enough。

Brilliant。

Hanna Abi Akl

Superbe introduction to literary theory and criticism with pertinent texts throughout。

Okay, this is a reference work and textbook。 I doubt many people read it entirely。 I have not but I discover on review I have read much of it over the past decades。 It is an old reference work but an interestingly contemporary one in its way。 I imagine revisions might someday change it。 The translations of included works are, in my lay view, excellent。 The distribution of works reflects trends that I think will fade from interest but that for the moment remain examples of criticism and critical Okay, this is a reference work and textbook。 I doubt many people read it entirely。 I have not but I discover on review I have read much of it over the past decades。 It is an old reference work but an interestingly contemporary one in its way。 I imagine revisions might someday change it。 The translations of included works are, in my lay view, excellent。 The distribution of works reflects trends that I think will fade from interest but that for the moment remain examples of criticism and critical literary history。 Having a broad range of selections edited to essentials at hand is useful。The hardbound book is well made。 It falls open and stays open。 The layout is simple。 There are simple reading lists for the contents that foster reading in specific areas of interest。 It is a browser's delight。 I bought my copy the year I retired and was flush with cash。 I bought it to enjoy in retirement which I have for now 14 years。 My copy is a tad used but still in great shape and still a pleasure to have and to read。 。。。more

Even though it's one of the most humongous books I've ever owned, this Norton Anthology holds a special place in my heart。 If this hadn't been a good read, all these travels from home to parent's home and to uni with it in my backpack would have been for nothing。 My backaches would've been for nothing。 But I feel I very much learned something from this beast。 The Norton Anthology provides a very good biography of each author, which then gives you sufficient background knowledge to be able to und Even though it's one of the most humongous books I've ever owned, this Norton Anthology holds a special place in my heart。 If this hadn't been a good read, all these travels from home to parent's home and to uni with it in my backpack would have been for nothing。 My backaches would've been for nothing。 But I feel I very much learned something from this beast。 The Norton Anthology provides a very good biography of each author, which then gives you sufficient background knowledge to be able to understand the primary texts。 I loved the diversity in their choice of authors (still way to go but it is an important step towards more inclusivity)。 So if you want to dabble into literary criticism out of free will or because you have to, I highly recommend this big friendly giant。 。。。more

This book is an anthology of excerpts from various works by noted literary critics。 It is a much better book when taken in conjunction with a lecture to explain the critical theories discussed in the book。 I read it for an online class。 My eyes are bleeding 。 。 。

Excellent selection of texts from Plato's Republic to Stuart Moulthrop's McLuhanist evaluation of the internet。 You can enter in knowing nothing and come out with a reasonable grasp of Marxism, formalism, german idealism, feminism, queer theory, reader-response theory。。。 anything。 I got this for only 20 bucks and over the course of a year and a half I got much more than my money's worth out of it。 Highly recommended Excellent selection of texts from Plato's Republic to Stuart Moulthrop's McLuhanist evaluation of the internet。 You can enter in knowing nothing and come out with a reasonable grasp of Marxism, formalism, german idealism, feminism, queer theory, reader-response theory。。。 anything。 I got this for only 20 bucks and over the course of a year and a half I got much more than my money's worth out of it。 Highly recommended 。。。more

Norton anthologies just do not disappoint

I spent about a week reading the bios of everyone mentioned, who influenced who & skimming the samples of their work provided。 So I didn't read this cover to cover like a novel。 I did go to the Norton website & print out the table of contents to annotate while I read through this mammoth of a book。 My end result is a list of books/theorists to explore and my 1st impressions of them jotted into a notebook or onto this table of contents。 Overall, it was very worthwhile to discover some schools of I spent about a week reading the bios of everyone mentioned, who influenced who & skimming the samples of their work provided。 So I didn't read this cover to cover like a novel。 I did go to the Norton website & print out the table of contents to annotate while I read through this mammoth of a book。 My end result is a list of books/theorists to explore and my 1st impressions of them jotted into a notebook or onto this table of contents。 Overall, it was very worthwhile to discover some schools of thought for how to examine literature。 This anthology goes through the history of literary theory beginning with the ancient greeks and ending in the 1990s。 The later years are more inclusive of African & feminist thinkers。 There's also a great sample of disability in literature that's presented in such an interesting way。 。。。more

Although pricey for a student on a budget, in the process of my degree, this book has become invaluable。 I bought this book before my first semester, and it has never been far out of hand since。 The exemplary footnoting and headnotes make studying and referencing straightforward, and the vast array of theories included means that this Norton edition is useful to many areas of study。 10/10 would recommend

Surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did。 A massive collection of interesting and relevant essays。

An anthology, -and hence incomplete, because not all the literary critics are mentioned/studied-,useful and informative。 To me, a good reference book of many influential literary critics from the western world。

In a life full of reading books, there are few books that have given me so much satisfaction to be done with。 This complement is backhanded but sincere: I'm glad that I know more about the theories and history: I'm glad I won't have to toil through this thing any more。 Since reading this felt like a marathon, let's hand out some awards: Cleverest rhymer: PopeMost impossible to understand: Kant (narrowly edging out Hegel)Most surprisingly interesting and variously talented (also a composer): Schi In a life full of reading books, there are few books that have given me so much satisfaction to be done with。 This complement is backhanded but sincere: I'm glad that I know more about the theories and history: I'm glad I won't have to toil through this thing any more。 Since reading this felt like a marathon, let's hand out some awards: Cleverest rhymer: PopeMost impossible to understand: Kant (narrowly edging out Hegel)Most surprisingly interesting and variously talented (also a composer): SchillerMost likely to make you quit your job and live life right, man: Emerson Most hauntingly interesting: Jung and Heidegger (tie)Most likely to make you think that maybe there's something to this deconstructionist stuff: de ManMost impressive on feminism: RichMost impressive on Marxism: JamesonMost impressive on the act of reading: FishMost likable for anyone who has tried to balance personal and academic life: TompkinsMost realistically helpful: the editors。 The notes are really good。 This book is a good tool, and it will increase your sense of self every time you look at the thing on your shelf。 。。。more

Read bits and pieces for class。 The class was miserable, but the book itself is fine。

Sydney

i found this book extremely difficult to get through and not all that helpful。 some of the readings were interesting, but there was often no explanation of how the essays chosen fit in with literary thoery or how they could be applied to literature。

Bhzd Sdgh

While the introductions to the theorists and philosophers are concise and clear enough, the book becomes more and more anglo, and americo, centric as it approaches the end of the 20th century, in a truly disgusting way。

Ava

It was extremely detailed。。。maybe too detailed for a beginner like me。

Don't accept reality at face value? Well, this is the book for you--probably the most important book on my bookshelf。 Anyone interested in art and life and meaning will be rewarded with 2,000 pages plus of philosophical and critical essays。 If that sounds boring, keep in mind these are the seminal texts that have shaped our human culture and identity--from Aristotle's "Poetics," to Karl Marx's "Das Kapital," to Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," to Jacques Lacan's "The Mirror Stage as Forma Don't accept reality at face value? My new-found favourite thing to study is theory and criticism。 Older poets, philosophers, writers, and their brilliant (and not so brilliant) ideas and theories。

I would probably have given this one star if I hadn't read it in school。 Really interesting and relevant if you read it in a classroom setting though。 I would probably have given this one star if I hadn't read it in school。 Really interesting and relevant if you read it in a classroom setting though。 。。。more

I'm about to complete my year long class on literary theory so I feel like I can finally mark this as read。 For the most part I really enjoyed the reading for this class。 I don't really care for psychoanalysis or Derrida, but overall this was a great class and I enjoyed expanding my horizons。 I'm about to complete my year long class on literary theory so I feel like I can finally mark this as read。 For the most part I really enjoyed the reading for this class。 I don't really care for psychoanalysis or Derrida, but overall this was a great class and I enjoyed expanding my horizons。 。。。more
